Greatest Ever Team
  Tim Sherwood
Page: 1, 2,
Brownie - I can't call my son Sherwood and not select him for this side can I ? .

FourLaneBlue - As for the second position I can't really look past Sherwood. One of only two players to lead Rovers to become champions of England. The other player is already in (Crompton) and I think it would be a little unfair to leave out Sherwood. Although Batty was an excellent player he had less influence due to injuries and being here a shorter amount of time. Personally I always thought Sherwood was underrated as he was not such a big name as England international Batty. Sherwood did win some England caps (three I believe) but all with Tottenham.

'Timothy' was something of an unsung hero when with Rovers and the fans never seemed to take to him in quite the same way as they did to Batty, Ripley or Shearer. It was when he was out of the team that we realised just how vital a player he was for us. There has been some complaining from older members of this board about more recent players ludicrously challenging true greats from the past. Although I agree to an extant it can also go the other way. Memories of poor games dim and all that is remembered are the wonderful moments. Sherwood should be remembered as a great player for us. Reliable, consistent, a classy passer and a leader. The likes of Jim and the old giffers can tug themselves silly about their boyhood heroes if they want (which is fine) and denigrate the more recent players (which isn't quite so nice) but we should remember that the greatest Rovers team in living memory did not ply their trade in the sixties. Instead, the won the title in 1995.

bob fleming - Sherwood. I don't think many people, me included, realised just how much he did for the team until he left. Held them together and always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. I remember one of his first games for Rovers was away at Port Vale in the old 2nd Division, he was truly awful and I thought we'd bought a right duffer. Goes to show that some players need time to settle in. Scored a few goals for us as well did Sherwood, but he won't get my vote either. Something about the fella that meant I never really warmed to him. Must have been his crap hair cut.

Speedie - Sherwood was a very good player for us. He ran the midfield during our meteoric rise, and jumped ship during the latter days of our decline. He could see passes that many other players could not, he'd open up the pitch for us and give players tremendous amounts of time and space with his vision. Fans used to moan now and again when one went wayward into the Riverside but when they came off they were great. He could put a tackle in, wasn't afraid of the rough stuff, but could not shoot straight, he always just put them over the bar. Overall a good one who was maybe worthy of a better England chance on his club performances but didn't have international class or consistency. His leaving was controversial, as was many of the glory team.

den - I still think he was underestimated. He certainly had a lack of pace, that stopped him being a really top class midfielder. What he did have though was vision. He was a leader. Dalglish didn't make him captain for nothing.

philipl - Sherwood, captain of the Premiership winning team and a truly complete midfield player with no small amount of skill (remember the swivelled flick at Elland Road which prompted the trvelling Rovers fans into a mock self-deprecating chant of "Blackburn are boring"?)

Drummer Boy - Tim "the pimp" Sherwood - much maligned because he wasn't fancy and gave the ball away; however, at his peak, when he didn't play or had an off day then Rovers usually didn't win. He did simple things effectively, didn't make a fuss, galvanised the team and was a superb captain of his time. He even chipped in with the odd goal - no mean achievement when you are in a team fronted by Shearer & Sutton.

His skill, talent, temperament and vision were much underrated and I reckon that, given time, I could put together a case denouncing the international managers of the time for ignoring him - not glamorous enough and not playing for a Sky TV-adopted club, I suspect.

Quite simpy, he made the team he was in tick, allowing the wingers to do what they did best which in turn allowed Messrs Shearer & Sutton to do what they did best. He was part of the "spine" that any team winning things has to have (Flowers, Hendry, Sherwood, Shearer) around which the rest could ebb and flow.

What made him better than Batty? When the grade got higher Tim rose to it whereas Batty always made like a crab when playing in Europe or against the better teams - no unnecessary sideways/backwards passes or unimaginative punts from Tim, thank you very much. Oh, and he was available for selection more often than Batty - and utterly consistent.

OK - he lost the ball occasionally but sheer percentages say that, given the amount he was on or around the ball, he was bound to lose out now and then. Tim has to be in the team and he has to be captain IMO.

philipl - Sherwood, captain of the Premiership winning team and a truly complete midfield player with no small amount of skill (remember the swivelled flick at Elland Road which prompted the trvelling Rovers fans into a mock self-deprecating chant of "Blackburn are boring"?)
