| Roger Jones |
|
den - Roger Jones was signed from Bournemouth and was an England U21 keeper. He gave one of the best ever performances by a rovers keeper that I've ever seen. He kept out Bolton Wanderers almost single handedly at Burnden Park. Any one else remember that. |
| al - Got to be Roger Jones Best I've seen in 50 odd years at Ewood. |
| Kennysuperbuyer - Roger Jones. Abrilliant all round keeper. |
| Exiled in Toronto - If I could choose from any of them in their prime to be between the sticks next week against the Arse, I'd have more confidence that Sir Roger would keep them at bay than anyone else. |
USABlue - Roger Jones, by half a length over Brad. Brads flaws, positioning at times, coming for the ball/narrowing the angle a huge man such as Brad should be using that to full advantage.
I can't remember a keeper who could catchand hold a ball as well as Roger could, I have seen full length diving saves where he did not just parry the ball but he would actully catch it and hold onto it.
Still, maybe biased from my time watching as Roger was always playing for us at lower levels, not the top flight. |
Revidge Blue - Excellent point USA, that is one of my my abiding memories of Sir Roger as well. Must have had superglue on his gloves. Unfortunately catching the ball and holding onto it as opposed to punching it seems virtually non existent these days.
Might be largely to do with the ball. Was speaking to Terry Gennoe some years ago and expressed the opinion that Tim Flowers whilst an excellent keeper maybe didn't command his 6 yard box as well as he might. Terry dis agreed and said when he was playing opposition players just used to hoof 50 or 60 yard balls straight down the pitch which were meat and drink. He was of the view that in the Premiership especially with the lighter balls crosses came in so fast from all angles you simply didn't have the time.
I digress. Sir Roger for me by a hair over Friedel. |
den - I went for Roger Jones. It was tough, but the fact that he is still remembered quite a few years later, by so many people, even though he only played in the lower leagues, just swayed me.
I agree with bob F as well, a good keeper is a good keeper, no matter what league he played in. |
Alan75 - After serious concideration, apologies to my mate Tim. but Ive gone with Roger Jones.
Cant remember him making a blunder, like other keepers that weve had at Rovers.
Didnt miss a game in the 74-75 season. 54 games - keeping 19 clean sheets. and he didnt exactly have the best defence in front of him. |
| waggy - voted for sir roger, but we have had so many decent keepers, jim arnold was magnificent when he played in the kendall era,i can actually remenber sir roger jones making a mistake at ewood al. |
| Big A - I've gone for Jones even though I never saw him. From what people have said it sounds like he was a cut above the quality of the rest of the side and performed over a long period of time.
